The Laboratory Safety Program is a complete written program for compliance with the OSHA regulation covering the use of chemicals in laboratories. Code of Federal Regulation 29 CFR 1910.1450. A written Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) must be developed and carried out by each employer who has a workplace where hazardous chemicals are used. This document is the Chemical Hygiene Plan for this workplace.

This program comes in a Word document format and can be easily edited to fit your company’s specific requirements.

Topics covered include:

  • Description of relevant laboratory standard operating procedures;
  • Identification of criteria used by the employer to determine and implement control measures (e.g., engineering controls, personal protective equipment) to reduce employee exposure to hazardous chemicals;
  • Assurances that engineering controls, such as fume hoods, are working properly and are well maintained;
  • Provisions for employee information and training in the hazardous chemicals that exist in the laboratory;
  • Description of the methods that will be used to provide employees with medical consultation and medical examinations;
  • The methods used as additional protection for employees who work with particularly hazardous substances, such as certain carcinogens; and
  • Designation of an individual who is responsible for overseeing the CHP’s implementation and the assignment of a Chemical Hygiene Officer.
